Baltic Transmission System Operator Agrees to Synchronize with European Network in February 2025

Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian transmission system operators “Augstsprieguma tīkls” (AST), “Litgrid” and “Elering (AST), “Litgrid” and “Elering” signed an agreement on the synchronization of the Baltic States’ power grids with those of the European continent in February 2025. The agreement stipulates that the de-synchronization of the Russian-controlled BRELL system and the synchronization with the continental European network will take place in February 2025, which is one year earlier than originally planned.In 2018, the three Baltic states signed an agreement to decouple their transmission networks from the Russian grid in 2026.The agreement also provides for the decoupling of their transmission networks from the Russian grid. According to the European Commission’s assessment, the synchronization of the Baltic States’ grids is a political and financial priority, for which more than EUR 1.2 billion has been allocated.
