South Africa to increase share of renewable energy to 40% by 2030

Recently, South Africa’s Presidential Climate Committee (PCC) said that solar and wind power plans are the fastest way out of South Africa’s electricity crisis, increasing the share of renewable energy in the country’s energy mix from 7 percent to 40 percent by 2030.

According to the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), coal-fired power generation will account for about 80 percent of South Africa’s electricity generation in 2022, with renewables (excluding hydropower) accounting for 7 percent. the PCC said South Africa should aim to integrate at least 8GW of solar and wind power into the grid each year for the next two to four years, with the country needing an additional 50 to 60GW of renewables by 2030. by 2023 About 2.5GW of new renewable energy projects were registered with South Africa’s National Energy Regulator (Nersa) in three months.
